What Is TPO Roofing?
TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a single-ply white reflective membrane that's heat-welded at the seams. It became the most-installed commercial roofing system in North America for one big reason: it bounces sunlight, which lowers cooling costs in air-conditioned buildings.
TPO is most often mechanically attached or fully adhered, and comes in 45-, 60-, and 80-mil membrane thicknesses. The heat-welded seams create a continuous waterproof membrane that's hard to beat for long-term performance — when installed correctly.
What Is EPDM Roofing?
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a black synthetic rubber membrane that's been protecting commercial roofs for over 60 years. Unlike TPO, EPDM seams are bonded with tape or adhesive — not heat — and the membrane is naturally flexible and UV-resistant.
EPDM is available in 45-, 60-, and 90-mil thicknesses and performs exceptionally well in cold climates. Many commercial roofs across the East Coast that were installed in the 1980s and 90s are still going strong on EPDM.
